FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT
Most full-time positions are filled through examinations offered by the New York State Department of Civil Service when job openings become available. The Parks Department hires titles such as Recreation Directors, Leaders & Supervisors, Aquatic Directors & Supervisors, Dog Control Officers etc. Some exams are given annually, others every three to four years, while still others are "continuous recruitment." SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT

The City of Syracuse Parks & Recreation Department Divides its seasonal employment opportunities into two seasons, summer and school year. Actual dates of employment vary during each season depending upon specific program needs. Applicants are hired on a seasonal basis, meaning employment is officially terminated at the end of the season. Job openings are limited.
Requirements for Seasonal Hires at the time of hire
- You must be 16 years or older to work for the Parks Department unless you are a lifeguard.

- You must provide the ORIGINAL Social Security Card - copies will not be accepted. If you do not have your card, you may obtain a new card at the Federal Building, 100 S. Clinton Street - 4th Floor- 479-0049. Their hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. You may not start work without this.
- If you are 16 or 17 years old, you be required to supply us with GREEN working papers from your school.
- CPR and Lifeguard cards will have to be supplied at the time of hire where applicable.
- You must reside in the City of Syracuse.

Pool Monitor |
Hours:
Pools are open 7 days per week during the summer. Schedule and work shifts vary by pool. Must be available on weekends and holidays.
Duties
include assisting lifeguards and pool managers with general supervision of the bathhouse and pool deck. This may also include monitoring pool attendance, checking patron height and swim attire (for admittance), and basic cleaning duties.

Pool Aide |
Hours:
Pools are open 7 days a week during the summer. Schedule and work shifts vary by pool. Must be available on weekends and holidays.
Duties
include but are not limited to monitoring pool attendance, checking patron height and swim attire (for admittance), and basic cleaning duties.
Requirements:
Most, if not all of pool aide employees are hired through

Night Security

Hours:
generally 6:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. (varies by site). Schedule and work shifts vary by pool. Must be available on weekends and holidays! Night-awake position providing security for outdoor city pools (and golf courses, where applicable). |
GOLF POSITIONS

Golf Course Attendant |
Hours:
Golf Courses are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 7 days a week. Must be available to work weekends and holidays.
Duties
include assisting with the operation/supervision of one of
two municipal, 9-hole golf courses
. Duties may include general course maintenance, assisting with youth groups/clinics/tournaments; clubhouse cashier.
Requirements:
Should have some familiarity with the game of golf. |
GROUNDS MAINTENANCE

Grounds Keeper

Duties
include assisting grounds/maintenance staff with general upkeep of outdoor parks, playgrounds, sport fields, and golf courses.

YOUTH RECREATION POSTIONS

Day Park Supervisor
|
Hours:
generally 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (varies by site). Monday - Friday. Supervisors must create a comprehensive, age-appropriate schedule of activities for a 7-week youth recreation program;maintain safety and security of park and facility; supervise staff;monitor registration/sign-in;prepare weekly reports. Responsibilities may also include administering a lunch program and participating in field trip activities.
Requirements:
MUST BE CPR-CERTIFIED. Creative, energetic personality a must!

Day Park Recreation Aide |
Hours:
generally 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (varies by site). Monday - Friday.
Duties
include assisting Day Park Supervisors with supervision of children and implementation of activities.

Mobile Recreation
|
Hours:
10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. Mobile Recreation staff travel to several sites per day in a mobile recreation vehicle. Staff is responsible for preparing and implementing a series of adventure-based games, cooperative-learning activities, and craft projects for youth. Some materials and guidebooks are provided, though staff creativity is a must. Staff will be responsible for preparing and submitting weekly reports.

Full Day Camp Counselor |

9:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Monday - Friday. Counselors responsibilities vary by week and by camp.

Basketball League Coach |
Hours:
Thursday nights for 8 weeks. Game times vary from week to week. One game per week. Coaches are needed for our ACTION JR boys teams, 13 - 15 yrs. Team rosters will be drafted from all league registrants. |
Basketball League Scorekeeper |
Hours:
5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Monday - Thursday.
Duties
include managing the book and/or clock during weeknight ACTION league basketball games at McChesney Community Center.
Requirements:
Must be knowledgeable of basketball rules and book management. |
Night Recreation Director |
Hours:
4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Weeknights.
Duties
include creating a comprehensive, age-appropriate schedule of activities for a 7-week recreation program; maintain safety and security of building; supervise staff; monitor registration/sign-in; prepare weekly reports. Applicant must have experience organizing and implementing age-appropriate sport and non-sport activities and must have experience working with teens.
Requirements: Experience leading recreation/teen programs. MUST BE CPR-CERTIFIED

Hours:
Between the hours of 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. Opportunities for part-time or per diem work leading tennis clinics on city park courts.
Duties
would include developing, organizing and leading a team tennis program.
Requirements:
Must be USTA-certified. |
Fitness Instructor |
Hours:
Vary according to site. Monday - Friday. Opportunities exist for certified fitness instructors to lead groups of youth, adults and/or seniors.
Requirements:
Experience leading safe, effective programs is a must. Certification by one or more national organizations required (ACSM, NSCA, ACE). CRP certification also required. |
Tutor/Academic Specialist |
Hours:
Between the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. A limited number of school-year positions are available that involve assisting with after-school, drop-in recreation programs.
Duties
may include developing and implementing age-appropriate education programs.
Requirements:
College degree preferred. Creative, energetic personality a must! |
After School Recreation |
Hours:
Between the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. A limited number of school-year positions are available that involve assisting with after-school, drop-in recreation programs.
Duties
include serving snacks/meals, field trip supervision, physical activity program development and implementation.
Requirements:
Experience working with youth in an educational or recreational setting. Creative, energetic personality a must! |
