    TO BECOME A WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR YOU MUST:  

    A. Turn 16 years of age by the last day of class  

    B. Register for a pre-requisite swim test held at Valley Pool
          Drop-ins welcome

    1. Pick a date and call the Aquatics Office at 473-4330 Ext. 3002
    • Sunday, December 10th                12:30 p.m.
    • Sunday, December 17th                12:30 p.m.
    • Tuesday, December 26th                 6:30 p.m.
    • Thursday, December 28th                6:30 p.m.
    • Saturday, December 30th              11:00 a.m.
    • Tuesday, January 2nd                      6:00 p.m.
    • Thursday, January 4th                     6:00 p.m.
    • Sunday, January 7th                      12:30 p.m.

    C. Pass a pre-requisite swim test  

    1. Required strokes; front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly.

    2. Head first entry from the deck.

    D. Sign up for the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Class 

    1. Winter Session, 2018 -    Please pretest at Valley Pool

    Sundays - January 14th to March 11th - 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
    all class dates must be attended

    This class includes online units through the American Red Cross website.
     
    Participants must have access to a computer.

    2. Registration Fee: Make check payable to COMMISIONER OF FINANCE

    i. City Residents - $25.00
    ii. Non-City Residents - $75.00

    Payable on the date of the pre-requisite swim OR 
    Mail or hand deliver your registration form and payment to:
    Syracuse Parks & Recreation, 412 Spencer Street, Syracuse, NY 13204 Attn: Aquatics Registration.

    4.Certification Fee: ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS you must bring a separate check for $60.00.
    Make check payable to COMMISIONER OF FINANCE with Red Cross printed on the memo line.   

    5. Training includes  a minimum of 8 hours outside, practical teaching at department sites. Weekend mornings and weekday evening opportunities available for practical teaching.

    Textbook fee is not included.   Textbooks must be purchased through the American Red Cross. 
    Directions to obtain the textbooks will be available on the first day of class.
